Caribbean Lyric Festival

About the event

The European Union and the Sinfonía Foundation, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic, present the Caribbean Lyric Festival 2021, an event to stimulate young singers from the Caribbean area with emerging lyrical careers and to promote cultural exchange in this region.

Carmen Heredia de Guerrero - Minister of Culture

Message from the European Union in the Dominican Republic

It is an honor for me to present the first edition of the Caribbean Lyrical Festival, organized by the European Union and the Sinfonía Foundation, with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic.

Music has always represented a fundamental pillar of European culture, is an essential component of its cultural diversity and has led to positive changes in society. Music is itself the cultural expression of people, it is an inexhaustible source of knowledge and can facilitate the approach to other unknown cultures. Through music the great stories of each society can be told, and opera is perhaps the artistic manifestation that best allows it. For many centuries, great stories of the Old Continent were told through opera and its lyrical titles largely defined the European spirit.

The objective of the Caribbean Lyrical Festival is to serve as a stimulus for young singers with emerging lyrical careers and to promote cultural exchange in the Caribbean. This event aims to promote the culture of the different regions that make up the Caribbean, give them the opportunity to interact and to produce a cultural exchange. Young singers are the sector that knows how to generate their own cultures with the greatest intensity and creativity and that is why we want to give them a platform to stimulate their artistic talents. At the Festival they will have the opportunity to publicize their work and get to know that of other artists and also receive the advice and opinions of great specialists in the lyrical art.

We are living in turbulent times for culture with the COVID19 pandemic that devastates the entire world, preventing us from being able to celebrate cultural events in person. From the European Union, we want this Caribbean Lyrical Festival to be a celebration of culture in a virtual way, adapting to these times so that we can continue to strengthen ties and bring cultures closer together through music.

We hope you can join us in this wonderful event and that we can celebrate and enjoy the selected artists on May 9, Europe Day. The opening of the call will take place on January 29, when we expect to receive your applications.

CARMEN HEREDIA DE GUERRERO – MINISTRA DE CULTURA

Message from the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic

On behalf of the Ministry of Culture of the Dominican Republic, welcome to this first Caribbean Lyric Festival, a project organized in conjunction with the European Union and the Sinfonía Foundation, with the objective of supporting the careers of young lyric singers of the Caribbean and promoting cultural cooperation in our region.

Without a doubt, the Caribbean has very privileged voices. However, socio-economic difficulties and the lack of platforms are major challenges for our promising young singers. For this reason, the creation of projects such as this festival is of vital importance for the survival and development of lyric singing in our islands.

Our Ministry of Culture is genuinely committed to continuing to support this type of initiative and to creating platforms in which our artists can develop and exhibit their talents, to the delight of Dominican society and the world.

We are all aware that during this global COVID-19 pandemic, the arts sector has been hit particularly hard. I know that it has been difficult for many artists to stay motivated to continue pursuing their artistic dreams amid so much uncertainty. But I am sure that soon we will return to normalcy and that the arts will flourish again.

I urge all the young singers of the Caribbean to continue working hard and honing their talents so that their art continues to be an incentive to the world. Take the opportunity to participate in this important Caribbean Lyric Festival, a very promising project that fills me with great enthusiasm.

Message from the Sinfonía Foundation

It is a great privilege for the Sinfonía Foundation, and its Board of Directors, that the European Union in the Dominican Republic has chosen us to organize the first Caribbean Lyric Festival 2021, an event in which young singers from the Caribbean area with nascent lyrical careers will participate, and that will serve at the same time to promote cultural exchange and strengthen ties of friendship between our beautiful islands.
